A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Your cat has been telling you things for years. This book translates.

Cats hide everything on purpose. They’re small hunters that evolved in the middle of the food chain, where looking weak gets you eaten. So they hide pain, they hide illness, and they communicate in signals so quiet that most owners never notice them. Then we bring them home and talk to them like dogs. Almost every problem between a cat and the person who loves it starts there.

The answers exist. They’re just scattered across vet textbooks, behaviour research, breeder know-how and rescue workers’ experience, and nobody puts them in one place in plain English.

So I did. Loving Your Cat follows a cat’s whole life in order, from choosing one and the first night home, through kittenhood, food, the litter box, health and getting older, all the way to the goodbye. Every chapter tells you what’s going on, why, and what to do about it. It also tells you plainly when the evidence is unsettled, and just as plainly when something is an emergency.

Here’s the part that matters most. A male cat going in and out of the litter box, straining and producing nothing, isn’t constipated. He may have a urinary blockage, and he can die from it within a day or two. Most owners wait until morning. This book tells you not to, and it tells you dozens of other things like that, the ones nobody mentions until it’s too late.

The book has 347 pages and fourteen parts. You can read it cover to cover on the sofa, or grab it at two in the morning when something’s wrong.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

So much love.
So many questions.

You’re doing your best. But affection alone doesn’t explain why the sofa is a scratching post, dinner is suddenly ignored, or a cuddle ends with a bite.

OPEN THE BOOK

A better cuddle
can start with a three-second pause.

Chapter 18 explores why petting can become too much, how cats ask us to stop, and a simple way to let them choose more.

FROM PAGE 104 · “THE CONSENT TEST”
  1. Stroke your cat for about three seconds, somewhere they like.
  2. Stop. Take your hand away.
  3. Wait and watch.

“If your cat wants more, they’ll tell you: they’ll push their head into your hand, rub against you, lean in, or move closer.”

One small example of the book’s approach: understand the reason, notice the signal, try a practical step.
